When my wife was pregnant with our second child we found out from from a blood test a few month into the pregnancy that the child was at risk for down syndrome. Down syndrome basically is a lifelong learning disability that delays a persons intellectual development. The news shocked us and a cloud of worry soon shadowed over us. The doctor however suggested that my wife get a second test done that would more accurately diagnosis the babies condition. So we scheduled the test and went home.
At some point, my brain randomly recalled the story of King David's first child with Bathsheba and how when the child was destined to die due to Davids sin in setting up Batheshebas husband to death so that he could take Bathsheba for himself. David prayed desperately to God along with fasting thinking to himself "who knows maybe the Lord will be gracious to me and spare the child" (2 Samuel 12:15-22). God didn't answer David's prayer and the child ended up dying, however strangely the story didn't discourage me and instead inspired me to think perhaps if I did what David did during this period of time until the day I get the results of the second test maybe the 1st test can be disproved or the child in my wife's womb can be cured validated by the results of the second test. So I did what David did to the best of my ability until the day we got the results of the 2nd test. After my wife went to do the second test, we received the results not long afterwards and to our relief it showed the baby was fine and the risk for down syndrome turned out to be minimal.
This situation taught me that when put in a dire situation where no human effort or resource that physically exists can address it, to always go somewhere alone, humble oneself, pray desperately with the mentality of "who knows maybe the Lord will be gracious to me", than wait, hold on to hope and see the situation through all the way to the end.
