3 Policies That Would Solve Climate Change

There are three reasonable policies that can address the climate crisis. It is that simple, yet it will be extremely difficult because of the key players needed to enact these three policies. The players are the 20 biggest nations in the world, otherwise known as the G20. The G20 According to the OECD , the G20 nations are responsible for emitting close to 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This means the G20 countries together are 80% responsible for climate change as we know greenhouse gases are the main drivers of increasing global temperatures . If the G20 can bring down its emissions and achieve net-zero by 2050 , then the rest of the world will follow as a result of the G20’s influence on the global economy, and we can avoid the worst impacts of climate change. If you follow politics you know it’s very difficult for governments at any level to agree and enact new policies, let alone with other countries. Mixed with the fact that climate change has become such a polarising g...

The Most Important Thing We Must Do To Avoid A Climate Disaster

Many of us are already aware that climate change is one of, if not, the biggest global issue of our lifetime. Over the past few centuries, we have increasingly relied on fossil fuels to run our everyday lives, resulting in excessive amounts of greenhouse gases being emitted, such as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide increasingly traps more heat within our atmosphere leading to a rising average global temperature. It has reached a point where we are witnessing more severe weather conditions such as floods, droughts, forest wildfires, and storms than ever before globally. Photo by Marcus Kauffman on  Unsplash At the rate that average global temperature is rising, we will eventually arrive at a situation where many coastal cities, regions, and entire nations will be underwater due to a massive sea-level rise as a result of melting glaciers and ice sheets worldwide. The natural question to ask next is what must we do to address climate change and avoid a climate disaster? We have to glob...

WHY THE G20 NEED TO ADOPT A GLOBAL MINIMUM CARBON TAX

Climate change  is a term that seems to pop up everywhere you look. From your social media feed, movies, and TV shows to what’s discussed in schools and businesses, it has become a top of mind in almost every facet of our society and is the defining global issue of our time according to the UN . More specifically, human-induced climate change, also known as global warming, is of primary global concern due to the excessive emission of greenhouse gases from human activity. The main human activity is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gas, which has resulted in large-scale shifts in weather patterns, particularly the increase in severe weather conditions such as floods, forest wildfires, and hurricanes across the globe. The biggest culprit of global warming is the richest and most developed countries, also known as the G20 countries. According to the UN , the G20 account for 85% of global GDP and are responsible for close to 80% of global emissions. This means that the bat...
